Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in their Europa League last-16 first-leg clash on Thursday, while Tottenham suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands.

Zirkzee Scores, but United Lose Grip in Spain

Joshua Zirkzee fired United ahead in the 57th minute with a crisp low strike from the edge of the box after being set up by Alejandro Garnacho. It was a moment of redemption for the young forward, who had endured a difficult spell after missing a decisive penalty in last week's FA Cup shootout loss to Fulham.

However, Erik ten Hag’s side failed to hold onto their lead, as Bruno Fernandes conceded a penalty for a handball inside the box. Mikel Oyarzabal made no mistake from the spot, leveling for Real Sociedad and leaving the tie evenly poised ahead of next week's return leg at Old Trafford.

United goalkeeper André Onana produced two crucial saves late on to keep the score level, but manager Ruben Amorim admitted his side struggled physically in the closing stages.

"I felt until the penalty we had control of the game, but after that, the momentum shifted," Amorim told TNT Sports. "The last 30 minutes were tough for us. Now, we take this stage to Old Trafford, and we have to be ready for a different kind of pressure."

Spurs Stumble Against AZ Alkmaar

Tottenham endured a frustrating night in the Netherlands as Lucas Bergvall’s first-half own goal handed AZ Alkmaar a narrow 1-0 victory.

Spurs struggled to create chances, registering just one shot on target, and were fortunate not to concede more as goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario made three key saves.

"We were nowhere near the level we needed to be, and that’s something we have to address," admitted manager Ange Postecoglou.

Adding to their woes, striker Dominic Solanke limped off after just 20 minutes, having only just returned from a knee injury that sidelined him for seven weeks.

Rangers Impress, Mourinho's Fenerbahce Falter

Elsewhere, Rangers secured an impressive 3-1 win away to José Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Cyriel Dessers put the Scottish side ahead early, but Alexander Djiku equalized for the hosts. Vaclav Cerny then restored Rangers’ lead before sealing the win with a late goal, leaving interim boss Barry Ferguson’s side in control ahead of the second leg.

Mourinho was far from pleased with his team’s performance. "We were very bad everywhere," he admitted. "Maybe you laugh, but for me, this was actually a good result—because the way we played, it could have been even worse."

Lyon, Roma, and Lazio Secure Late Wins

Lyon took a huge step towards the quarterfinals with a 3-1 away victory over Romanian side FCSB. Malick Fofana scored twice late on after Alexandru Baluta had canceled out Nicolas Tagliafico’s opener.

In Italy, Roma snatched a dramatic 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao. Paulo Dybala rattled the crossbar before Iñaki Williams gave the visitors the lead. Angelino equalized, and Eldor Shomurodov struck in stoppage time after Athletic had a player sent off.

Lazio left it even later to claim a 2-1 win at Viktoria Plzen despite finishing with nine men. Gustav Isaksen scored in the 98th minute to clinch victory after Nicolo Rovella and Samuel Gigot had both seen red.

Frankfurt Edge Ajax in Comeback Win

Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to defeat Ajax 2-1 in Amsterdam. Brian Brobbey gave the Dutch side an early lead, but Hugo Larsson and Ellyes Skhiri responded to hand Frankfurt the advantage going into the second leg.

With several ties delicately poised, the Europa League is set for an exciting round of second-leg encounters next week.
