Kane's Double Fires Bayern Past Leverkusen in Champions League

Harry Kane described his two-goal performance in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 Champions League last-16 first-leg victory over Bayer Leverkusen as "probably" the most significant of his time at the club.
The England captain opened the scoring with a header in the ninth minute before converting a second-half penalty, putting Bayern in a commanding position ahead of next week's return leg against the German champions. The result keeps their hopes alive for a home final in Munich this May.
Kane Steps Up on the Big Stage
Still searching for his first major trophy, Kane played a decisive role in Bayern’s crucial win. When asked if these were his most important goals for the club, the 31-year-old admitted, "Probably, I'd say so."
"We knew what to expect in this game. There was a lot of hype around it, but we stayed calm, and I stayed calm," Kane said.
"Scoring early was great, and getting the second one topped it off – but as always, I’m looking ahead to the next one."
Since arriving from Tottenham in the summer of 2023, Kane has been prolific, netting 75 goals in 79 appearances across all competitions.
Bayern End Leverkusen Hoodoo
Before Wednesday’s clash, Bayern had failed to beat Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, drawing three and losing three of their previous encounters. This win finally broke that streak, but Bayern boss Vincent Kompany dismissed any talk of a statement victory.
"There are no statements—just focus on the next game," Kompany insisted.
Neuer Injury a Concern for Bayern
The only setback for Bayern was an injury to captain and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who was forced off and replaced by 21-year-old debutant Jonas Urbig.
Kompany remained calm about the situation, stating, "It's unfortunate, but I’ve spoken before about our squad depth. If it’s Urbig, then it's Urbig—we move forward without hesitation."
With Bayern now in a strong position, all eyes turn to next week’s second leg, where they will look to secure their place in the Champions League quarterfinals.
